Program Overview

Weber State’s BS in Health Information Management covers the systems and practices used to manage, protect, and use healthcare information. Graduates meet the educational route described by the school for the Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) exam. Students may study fully online or use face-to-face and independent-study courses.

The AAS in Health Information Technology focuses on coding, medical records, electronic health records, and appropriate release of information. Weber says graduates qualify to sit for the Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) exam. The associate degree can also serve as a step toward the BS.

Students who already hold a bachelor’s degree can pursue Weber’s Post-Bachelor’s Certificate in Health Information Management. It is a separate 30-credit route to RHIA exam eligibility.

Curriculum and Practical Experience

The 10-course certificate includes health data management, diagnosis and procedure coding, clinical data and revenue cycle work, privacy and security, health information systems, an internship, human resources, and healthcare finance. Each course is three credits.

The BS and AAS include professional practice experiences. Before those courses, students must complete a background check, drug screen, and proof of immunizations. Weber identifies HIM 2861 for the AAS and HIM 2861 plus HAS 4860 for the BS.

Admissions

Students first enroll at Weber State and then apply to the School of Health Administrative Services program. The BS requires a GPA of at least 2.75; the AAS requires at least 2.5. The program application carries a $25 fee.

Both undergraduate programs require Medical Terminology and Integrated Human Anatomy and Physiology I, completed with a C or better. The BS also accepts prior completion of a health information technology program in place of the anatomy and physiology prerequisite. Applicants to the certificate need a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution and submit transcripts and a résumé.

Tuition and Costs

For 2026–27, Weber estimates $6,081 in tuition for two full-time semesters for upper-division Utah residents and eligible online-only nonresidents, plus $811 in student fees. Nonresidents who study on campus are listed at $17,156 in tuition for the same period. These are annual full-time estimates, not a complete BS program price; transfer credits and course loads change the total.

The certificate page lists $408 per credit, effective April 2025. Thirty credits at that rate equal $12,240 in tuition, before any additional costs. Students can choose their start date, and Weber says the program is designed for completion in 30 months.

Format, Accreditation, and Fit

Weber offers its BS and AAS online, face to face, or through independent study. The certificate uses online, self-paced independent study, with up to six months allotted for each course.

Weber identifies CAHIIM accreditation for the BS in Health Information Management and the AAS in Health Information Technology. The school says the AAS accreditation is reaffirmed through the 2028–29 year. Applicants should distinguish this program accreditation from the separate post-bachelor certificate.

The AAS fits students seeking an entry route into health records and information technology work. The BS and certificate fit students focused on information management, compliance, data governance, or RHIA eligibility.
